NOT ALL KIDS LOVE SPORTS?

Updated: Sep 22, 2022

Our perception of what we want for our kids growing up isn’t always the reality. We want our kids to be sporty, active, busy and socializing. I’m guilty of this, I want my boys playing team sports like I did when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the reality for me and many other parents is that the world has changed so much since I was a kid. I mean, a vast majority play sports and lead busy lifestyles but many do not. Not all kids want to do team sports or any sports but they do want to be fit, healthy and strong. There is a gap in our generation and I have watched and listened to try and close this gap.

Both my boys were extremely busy pre-covid but as they were forced to be more sedentary, this seems to have suited them better for now. Instead of continuing to force them to do what they didn’t enjoy, I created something they could enjoy!

After my 12 or so years in the Fitness Industry and being around sporting clubs, one thing I knew for sure is that some kids lacked mobility, basic strength, agility and coordination. Of course if your kids are doing sports like gymnastics, karate, dancing etc., these things are often part of the learning. In team sports like soccer, football, netball etc., it’s really not. I know this because I grew up playing each of the above team sports and pushed through all my Imbalances to be a strong and fit team member. I also taught my body to grow with its imbalances and I am paying for that now in my 30’s.

I have found teaching and educating my young clients on the importance of stretching, mobility and muscle control has made a huge impact on their movement patterns and confidence. I point out the differences in their movement and we discuss the pros and cons. From there we put a plan in place to combat this for a better and earlier positive outcome. This in itself means that these guys will be ahead of their peers as they get older and hopefully learn to look after their bodies rather than spend an awful amount of time trying to repair their bodies.
